CLAY TARGET SHOOTING

​The South West Academy of Sport (SWAS) Clay Target Shooting program, proudly supported by the Victorian Clay Target Association (VCTA) and the Victorian Institute of Sport, provides coaching and education sessions designed to complement athlete’s daily and weekly training environment. The program aims to bring together the most talented junior players in the South West region and develop them for selection into State or National squads.

Program Structure

The Clay Target Shooting program is structured to deliver 7 training sessions over the program. These sessions are scheduled to compliment an athlete’s daily and weekly training environment as well as avoid Regional and State Teams events.  The program also aims to include guest coaches to provide additional insights to the training environment.

The Clay Target Shooting squad program runs from April to March

Indicative Associated Costs

SWAS Fees

-  New Athlete $470 inc GST

- Returning Athlete $420 inc GST

SWAS Shooting Jacket - $150 inc GST  (SWAS subsidises the cost of the jacket)

5-6x cartridges per shoot payable directly to the coach/club

Please note that we are currently reviewing our program delivery for 2024. 

As such, not all benefits listed may be implemented in 2024.

Benefits to athletes selected in SWAS

  • 7 training sessions

  • Musculoskeletal screening – conducted by qualified Exercise Physiologists to guide S&C programming and sports specific training 

  • Access to strength and conditioning sessions in a facility in the athlete’s shire over the course of the program, sessions are ran by qualified strength and conditioning coaches 

  • S&C programs are built and delivered through the TeamBuildr app. 

  • Education sessions delivered by industry professionals- including injury prevention, recovery, nutrition, sports psychology, sports integrity and much more 

  • Skill development and planning with accredited coaches 

  • Sports science fitness testing used to inform S&C and sports specific training over the course of the program 

  • Practical and online sessions that develop the “whole of an athlete’ both in and out of competition – a sport/school/life balance, leadership, goal setting, development of support structures and systems

  • SWAS will support state and national athletes for travel and accommodation to tournaments subject to funding from the Victorian Government Pathway Travel Grant

SWAS Clay Target Shooting Program Selection Criteria

The SWAS Clay Target Shooting program caters for athletes in the U18 age groups. The program can service up to 12 athletes with final numbers dependent upon competency against the selection criteria.  Athletes must;

  1. Be an existing member of an affiliated ACTA club in the South West, or the Victorian Clay Target Association directly.

  2. Have a positive attitude and a willingness to learn.

  3. Have reached a satisfactory standard of based on current ranking and/or performance at local tournaments and regional events.

  4. Show a willingness to learn and be able to demonstrate competency with due regard to firearm safety.

  5. Have a parent present at all sessions.
