83 ATHLETES AWARDED SWAS SCHOLARSHIPS FOR 2019

For the 2019 year 83 athletes were awarded scholarships with the South West Academy of Sport (SWAS). These athletes came from right across the South West Region with 19 athletes from Warrnambool, 13 from Corangamite, 14 from Moyne, 21 from Southern Grampians and 16 from Glenelg.


SWAS runs programs for Netball, Tennis, Cycling, Clay Target Shooting, Surfing, Golf and Individual Athlete Programs.


The Selected SW Netball athletes train together with expert coaches to develop their technical and tactical on court skills and physical preparation and participate in education sessions to improve their athlete wellbeing.


The Tennis athletes work with expert Coaches to improve their on court skills and have education sessions to develop their mindset and preparation. Tennis athletes also have the opportunity to compete at the Inter Academy Challenge.


The Cycling program provides selected athletes with workshops and cycling sessions. Athletes receive valuable tactical and skill advice.


The Clay Target Shooting Athletes are provided with training days, coach support and education sessions to develop their ability to perform at their best.


The Surfing program represents a select group of talented SW surfers the athletes are provided coaching, training and competition support, education sessions designed to complement athlete’s daily and weekly training environment and prepare them for big waves and higher levels of competition.


Individual Athlete Program sports include: Athletics (track and field), AFLW, Gymnastics, Basketball, Volleyball, Cricket, Hockey, Netball, Wheelchair Basketball and Swimming.


The SWAS programs couldn’t run without the support of our gyms and coaches that assist our athletes weekly with Strength and conditioning sessions so thank you to the below for all of your assistance.

2019 Athletes were inducted into SWAS on Sunday 10th February. Athletes were introduced to the SWAS team, received their 2019 uniform, participated in planning, functional movement patterns, strength and conditioning and recovery sessions. All athletes had Muscular skeletal screening with Zoe from Axis Physiotherapy. Athletes were provided with pre game eating with EatFit Nutrition. Psychology & Getting the Most out of Your Mind was presented to parents and athletes by Dr. Jodie Fleming; The Psychology of It. Finally athletes had the honor of listening to guest speaker Carol Cooke, 3x Paralympic Gold Medalist, who shared her extremely inspirational story.
