Glenelg Strong in Squad
9 of the 17 strong squad reside in and around Portland and include Jayden Christensen, Lachlan Bail, Emma & Megan Surkitt, Vidal Naidoo, Nathan Butler, Liam Macklin, Ashwin Singh & Kate Shiels.
The players ranging from 12 – 15 years old successfully trialled in Portland last month with selections made by Tennis Victoria coaches and advised in the last week of March.
The program which is has been supported by Tennis Victoria for the last 5 years provides athletes intensive fortnightly training, travel to Australian Points Tournaments, matchplay training coupled with services such as fitness programs, sports science and personal development workshops.
SWAS Executive Officer Jeff Mutsaers said “It great to see so many kids in Portland try out and achieve selection”.
“Portland Lawn Tennis Club has done a terrific job with their junior programs and Portland Club Professional, Peter McKenzie has clearly managed to share his passion for the sport with the regions youngsters” Mutsaers said.
Other members in the squad include Southern Grampians players; Benjamin Murray, Curtis Noble, Willow Sainsbury & Declan Murphy and from Warrnambool; Samuel Wilde
Zac Urquhart and Georgia Mutsaers and from Corangamite, Jeremy Attrill.
The squad will return to Portland on May 1 to participate in the National Talent ID Program, which will be open for the public to participate in, followed by another squad training session.
