Athletes Sydney Bound

A squad of nine South West Academy of Sport (SWAS) athletes competed over the weekend at the Victorian Youth Track and Field Championships at Olympic Park bagging 8 medals.

Five members medalled earning selection to compete at the National Track and Field Championships in two weeks at Homebush Stadium, Sydney.

Warrnambool’s Ben Konigson 17, qualified for the Nationals in the last event of the three day meet with a silver medal in the men’s under 20 triple jump with a 13.16 metre leap.

Also from Warrnambool, Nathan Krepp 15, scored a gold in the men’s under 17 shot put and silver in discus and hammer throw but had already earned his Victorian singlet with his All Schools performance late last year.

Cobden throwers Cheyanne Rohan and Darcy Meade competed with Meade missing out on a podium finish but Rohan taking out bronze in the under 16 women’s javelin with a throw of 31.05 metres, just 28 cm behind the gold medal throw.

13 year old Kate Lewis from Cavendish came tantalisingly close to a podium finish in the under 15 women’s long jump finishing fourth from a field of fifteen athletes with a jump of 4.73 metres, 25 cm shy of a medal. Kate also made it through to the 400 metre under 15 women’s final.

Sheridan Krause 14, earned herself a spot on the Victorian Squad by medalling in 2 events. She brought home bronze in the under 15 women’s triple jump and settled for another bronze in the 200 metre hurdle after stumbling at the last hurdle and recovering to just get beaten on the line.

Portland 14 year old, Nadia Bunge competed in the 100, 200 and 400 metre events qualifying for the finals in the 200 while Luke Bevan, 16 made it through to the 800 metre prelims with personal bests in the 800, 1500 and 300 metre events.

Adam Cassie 16, from Narrawong won a bronze medal in the under 18 men’s shot event qualifying him for the Nationals.

SWAS Executive Officer Jeff Mutsaers said “We are very proud of the squad, particularly those who had never competed at this level before like Ben, Nadia, Luke and Adam. It’s a reality check for these new athletes as they get to see the best in the state (and country) and this often helps them re-focus on their training and strive to meet the new benchmark”

“It was a full on three days of competition with the introduction of under 15 and 17 categories meaning the events went late into the evenings on Friday and Saturday” Mutsaers said.
