Squad Weather Central Vic Storm
The Championships took place at Elmore Golf Club for the ninth year in two days of diverse weather conditions with a beautiful day on Saturday contrasted by diabolical weather on Sunday.
Portland’s Brad Treloar (pictured) performed in the storm coming up B Grade net winner on Sunday reducing his Saturday score by 12 strokes (82/70/152) and earning him the Alec Calvert Memorial Encouragement award for most improved performance. It’s the first time the trophy has returned home to the late Alec’s own Corangamite district.
Other performers included Hamilton’s Jaymie McFarlane 14, who was the girls net winner on day one and runner up overall with her net scores (70/76/146) and Cobden’s Thomas Rix 15, A grade net winner on day two and overall net runner up (80/72/152)
Other district winners included Terang’s Andrew Meade 16, who was the B Grade scratch winner with 84/89/173 off the stick.
The event attracted nearly 70 competitors from squads including Victorian Golf Association, the South West Academy of Sport and the Sunraysia and Bendigo District.
SWAS Golf Program Manager John Snowden said “The squad of nine performed above expectations and it was strange to see the outstanding performances happening as the weather came in. I don’t know if that reflects the type of weather the squad are used to on the coast but the worse the weather got, the better they played”.
“It’s great to see the Alec Calvert trophy coming home for the first time. Brad did really well to turn his game around to the tune of 12 strokes between Saturday and Sunday”.
“The squad were fantastic over the weekend, with their behaviour and etiquette. They all represented their region really well leaving quite an impression” Snowden said.
The squad’s next outing will be the Corangamite District Golf Association Championships in September.
