SWAS Table Tennis Players State Selected

South West TAFE Table Tennis Academy Squad members, Ben Taylor and Emma Manderson (both 14) have been selected in the Victorian Under 15 Squad to compete in the National Championships in Hobart in late September.

It’s the first time either athlete has made state selection and by doing so have achieved their 2008/09 season goal.

Their selection is base on performance during the past season which started on a high with wins in the Victorian State Schools Table Tennis Championships in October. Ironically both athletes suffered sidelining injuries which required significant effort to recover from and regain control of their training and competitions as part of their selection targets.

South West Academy of Sport Table Tennis Program Manager, Mark Taylor said “I was ecstatic when I learned of the selection of two. They are both very deserving because of the work they have put in to achieve their selection. They’ve really made the most of every opportunity that has been presented to them in the academy program and their reward is the selection which presents them with their next opportunity.”

“The selection is proof to me that the junior development program being provided as part of the South West Academy of Sport is working and the elite coaching and other essential services have certainly paid off”.

“The depth of the players in the squad provides a higher level of training and this quality training is where the difference is really being made’ Taylor said.

Emma and Ben will attend their first state squad training session this weekend in Melbourne and will continue their preparation for their first performance on the National stage.
